Luxury Portals Take on Indian buyers

For millions of web users in India fashion portal www.fashionandyou.com in nothing new. This online web portal has a huge catalogue of apparels from all major international brands. What sets this portal apart from any other site offering hi fashion clothes is that you can find fabulous discounts on high-end labels which are sometime as high as 70 per cent. The list of brands includes Boggi Milano, Baume and Mercier, DKNY, Tag Heuer, Escada and Forever New. So if you have been eyeing that stunning DKNY bag or that posh watch from Tag Heuer, it is a good idea to snap it up here. What difference does it makes that it’s a season old?

Brain child of Uppal and Harish Bahl, www.fashionandyou.com is a private shopping club where top-end brands can be bought at throwaway prices. After they tasted success in Russia, Switzerland, Turkey and Brazil working on the similar lines they turned towards India. Their first sale in India was a greater hit than they had expected. Uppal, CEO of fashionandyou.com says “There is a greater awareness of fashion and international brands in India. It’s the perfect time to introduce this aspect of e-commerce here.”

As if to validate his statement, five online luxury portals have been launched in India in last as many months, and most of them are doing extremely well. The reason can be attributed to the unflagging purchasing power of Indian middle class. The only thing that has changed with the exposure to international brands is that now they are more conscious of what they buy. This characteristic, which is unique to India, works in the favour of these luxury portals who offer these high end brands at great discount.

For those who think most buyers of these luxury brands belong to the metros, Meghna Pradipak Reddy of www.desicouture.net offers an insight. She tied up with designers like Shantanu and Nikhil, Neeta Lulla and Swapnil Shinde, besides a number of up-and-coming designers from India’s various fashion weeks and launched her portal last August. But the overwhelming response came from places like Coimbatore, Vizag and Ludhiana. Her regular clientele now also include people from US, UK, Dubai, Singapore and New Zealand

Discounts up to 70 percent are possible as these portals are mostly selling off the excess stuff or leftovers from the previous season which these portals pick at discounted rate. The mantra of success is to give kitschy items that might not be in vogue after a particular season a miss and stick to what is classic. They choose apparels that can be used across seasons.

For Indian clients looking for top brands at an affordable price it’s a win-win situation. With minimal shipping charges and attractive incentives for getting more members, these interactive sites offer alteration services and close-ups of the outfit from every possible angle. It works well for the brands too. They get larger geographical penetration without compromising on their brand image. It also takes care of their excess stock.

Ethics in Viral Marketing

Something as new as viral marketing calls for a framework of ethics that will act as a guideline when it is implemented. Many have already begun working on this. Here is a thought about the ethics that I feel should be incorporated by the players of viral marketing to ensure fair and professional practices.

What is Viral Marketing?

Before you think this is some kind of virus doing the rounds, let me define viral marketing for you in simple words. This is a marketing tool that uses an idea to spread through pre-existing social networks. The plan is to actually help market one’s business or cause while spreading this idea. This marketing technique encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others to produce exponential increase in brand awareness. It is called viral because like viruses, such strategies get rapidly multiplied and thus, help send the message across to a large number of customers.

To make it more simple, viral marketing can be described as online referral marketing used by marketers to get new marketing leads. When used off the internet, ‘word-of-mouth’, ‘creating a buzz’, ‘leveraging the media’ and ‘network marketing’ are the more commonly used terms for viral marketing.

Content

To start with, it is very important to create specific content keeping in mind the community you are writing for. Just don’t be in any rush to write generic content with the sole aim of submitting it to every site. This will only mislead people and will have negative impact on your brand image in the long run. Create content with the thought of making it successful even if everyone is aware of its purpose of being created specifically for viral marketing.

‘Knowing what people are looking for and providing them with relevant information’ is the key to successful viral marketing.

Participate in social marketing sites

It is our ethical obligation to participate in the community not only for promoting self interest but also to benefit the community. This is a great way of building ones reputation too!

You can help the community you believe in by inviting new members. Giving your profits a back seat for once, you can find useful content for the community. By extending support to the members and their activities on a community, you can help add value to the community without any hidden selfish motives.

Vigilance

Though tough, but keeping a check on your employees and clients for unethical practices will help maintain the viability of these communities as markets in the future for you.

It is in your interest to ensure that employees and clients are not creating multiple accounts, purchasing or trading votes and in any way trying to harm competitor’s content or accounts. Go with the notion that if someone is harming these sites and communities it will, in the time to come, harm you and your business as well.

Here, I would also like to mention a new set of rules introduced by The Direct Marketing Association (The DMA) for the use of online referral, or viral marketing. These guidelines relate to the kind of marketing where personal information about a prospect is taken by the marketer.

As per the rules, the marketer must disclose intended uses of the information when taking any reference. The referring individual should also be informed that their own contact information will be provided to those they have referred to the marketer. Also, the recipient should be given the option of opting out from any future communication in the first and any subsequent e-mail communications.

Also, it is the moral responsibility of the marketers to take prior permission from the referred person before selling, renting, sharing, transferring or exchanging a referred e-mail address.

Facebook Techniques of Marketing

From being a mere networking site used by college students for sharing pictures to a business- networking platform used for self-promotion, advertising and multimedia interaction, Facebook has grown beyond expectation. The high volume of traffic that Facebook receives on a daily basis makes it an important marketing tool for generating tons of traffic. It is a sure short way of reaching the precise audience through relevant targeted ads.

What makes Facebook a favoured marketing tool among businesses is the endless ways in which one can advertise their business for free here. With many new applications and add-ons, Facebook allow its users to advertise their businesses through social ads and more. The tools make it possible for businesses to easily tap into the Facebook crowd with some high-profile advertising. What is needed is creativity along with a deep understanding of the opportunities offered by Facebook to make optimum use of these applications for ones own benefit.

It must be understood that marketing in a social community takes a little different approach than marketing in other contexts. One thing that must always be remembered is that what ever you do never offend a community of facebook! Once you loose your trust, it’s difficult to win it back. This is a continuously growing community with almost 46 million members, with a growth rate of 3% a week. For figures, almost all of my friends and relatives are on facebook! Don’t let this vast sea of customers go by.

To start with, create an impressive and informative profile page. This is a great way to brand yourself or your business. But remember, that a profile page is not where you can promote your product or service. Just try and create a likable page that talks about you and your ideologies.

Once profile is ready, you need to add friends with same interests to your profile. You can also try to add friends from the same industry that you belong to. This will give you an exposure and link you with right people for your business growth. Getting attention of prospective customers can be a tough task. You can do this by putting links to articles you’ve written.

Joining a Facebook Group can get you immediate response. There are all kinds of groups active on facebook. Choose the one that suits you and your product and use this platform to share information with others. You can text-message other members, send them emails, comment on their profiles or contact them too.

Another great way to target advertising to a specific demographic is by buying an ad on Facebook. Called Facebook Flyers Basic, the tool helps you to create banner-like advertising on networks. You can also use Flyers Pro, a cost-per-click advertising program that works through keyword searches just like Google AdWords does.

Facebook is no doubt a very powerful platform that can be used to get your brand, product, service, or business mainstream. With millions of users online from college students to housewives you can truly get your business out there.

Just Imagine….

Sometime life ask you to imagine and sometimes it leave you only to imagine…Well…Imagination…something to imagine that does not have boundaries, frameworks, bars…..sometimes you need to ride on a trip that takes you to a place where you would or/and could like to go….People who know me will tell that I am always on such a trip.

That’s what I do!!!!

That what I do to live, survive, do my job…..just imagine….I imagine thing and sometimes thingS….that I wish or may do one day. Imagination…something that takes me places without leaving my seat.

Wikipedia explains Imagination, also called the faculty of imagining, is the ability of forming mental images, sensations and concepts, in a moment when they are not perceived through sight, hearing or other senses. Imagination helps provide meaning to experience and understanding to knowledge; it is a fundamental facility through which people make sense of the world, and it also plays a key role in the learning process. A basic training for imagination is the listening to storytelling (narrative) in which the exactness of the chosen words is the fundamental factor to 'evoke worlds.

Don’t worry about the definition…..Imagine is not worth a define. Its something that you have to do. I guess we in which ever face of lives are are imagining….when I become big…..when I will be rich…..when everyone will know me……when I can look back in those eyes……When……

Foot Steps

Some Stories are not meant to be told, but then some are meant to be the other way around. So here is a small one to end the week with. I guess few of you must have already heard this one as it has told many times. But again, its worth telling many more times.

Foot Steps….The Story

One Night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonged to him and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you you'd walk with me all the way, but I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me." The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."
